Phuket Bike Rental Guide: Everything You Need to Know

My name is Lev, I've been to Phuket about 5 times in total +/- 2 years. I wrote this article to share my rental experience and the intricacies I've learned over the years. And I've learned a lot since I launched getbike, a scooter rental service in Bali in 2018 and launched in Phuket in 2023.

There are so many rentals in Phuket, prices are different and conditions are different. The coolest rentals give bikes without passport, take only a cash deposit. You can take any bike, for any taste, at any time and there are really a lot of bikes. I personally never had any problems with the rentals and with bikes, but my friends had cases when the bike before the return stolen - ie. It remains tomorrow to return the bike and it for some reason stolen, it was about 5 years ago, but such cases happened.

But about everything in order. Next, I will tell you everything in detail.

Phuket is a unique city where tradition meets modernity and ancient culture comes alive at every corner. But what makes a scooter particularly appealing in this place? The answer is simple: freedom and flexibility of movement.

Here's what one tourist writes:

"About the bikes on the ride is quite comfortable, the movement is predictable, understandable."
Ilyunin Danil, coach, Instagram
been to Phuket 5 times.

Phuket is located on the west coast of Thailand, in the Andaman Sea of the Indian Ocean, and is considered the largest island in Thailand. The island is connected to the mainland of the kingdom by three bridges.

Unlike Bangkok, where traffic can be intense and restrictive, Phuket traffic is comfortable, in addition, between the villages there are large areas where you can accelerate and traffic is not so dense.

A scooter will allow you to travel these narrow lanes, bypass the traffic and enjoy complete freedom of movement on your own to visit all the magnificent temples or find the lost local markets.

Scooter is the main mode of transportation in Phuket.

The city has 360 thousand local population and everyone has a bike, even many school children :)

For a tourist, a scooter in Phuket gives incredible freedom of movement and opens up a wide range of possibilities, compared to sightseeing tours or public transportation. And the rental prices are so low that renting a scooter in Phuket is often even more profitable than taking public transportation and even more so than taking a cab.

Phuket Transportation System: Prices and Features

The first thing to note is that the streets are quite narrow and winding. There are often no places for parking, it is very problematic to throw the car somewhere, so the bike is much more convenient.

The asphalt is mostly good, but there is also killed. And there are streets a couple of meters wide, on which two cars cannot separate. To be exact, not streets, but alleys, in Thai it is "soi" or "soi". They do not have their own names, unlike full-fledged streets, they are usually called "soi + the name of the street to which the alley adjoins + number".

"About the bikes on the ride it's comfortable enough, traffic is predictable, clear."
Neha, USA, Traveling for 5 years in Asia

Here's what one tourist writes about the transportation system:

"The transportation system is well developed, there are cab and bike cab services: Grab and Bolt, but it is understandable that cab drivers sometimes refuse orders because it is not profitable for them to take orders. In general, everything works pretty well, of course, in rush hour the only gap, it is very difficult to call a car, because there are few cars, on tanks is not always convenient to call because someone with a child or afraid on a bike - they do not like this story. In the middle of the day can call, but in the morning or evening during rush hours it becomes a problem. There are also red-trucks, these are such red pickup trucks, Thai history, you can ride them too, they are not the cheapest and you stand in traffic jams, breathe all this nonsense, because they take a long time to go, if you are on a bike you jump the traffic jam, but when you ride on such an open pickup truck, naturally you breathe it all, but at the same time it is quite a convenient form of transportation that you can use. I can't say anything about buses. Everybody uses red-trucks - they replace the shuttle buses. There is an official cab, you can use it, but now grab and bolt these two apps are changing the market a lot."

.

Until recently, Phuket had a poorly developed public transportation system in the form of city buses. Due to unprofitability in 2011 the buses were discontinued, but it did not create any great difficulties for traveling around the city. Now you can easily get to any place in the city or out of town by shuttle buses, tuk-tuks, cabs or rented transportation. To explore the city center, you can do without transportation at all and see everything on foot.

What is the best way to get around Phuket other than a bike?

I think there is nothing better than a bike in Asia! But for the sake of completeness, I will briefly tell you about the other modes of transportation.

Red-Truck Cabs

Prices range from 20 to 60 baht per ride.

A myriad of shuttle buses run around Phuket, called Songthaew or Se-Lor. These are the main form of transportation in the city. They are small trucks converted for passenger transportation with a passenger box instead of a body. Exactly the same Songthaew runs around Pattaya, and the order of their use in Phuket is the same. The shuttle buses are said to be controlled by Phuket's "cab mafia," but that shouldn't bother you. The fare for a ride around town is fixed at 20 baht. Out of town, you can go for 60 baht.

Tuk-Tuk

Prices range from 40 to 150 baht.

There are three-wheeled tuk-tuks traveling around Phuket, similar to Bangkok's tuk-tuks. They work like cabs on random routes. Prices for a trip on them are higher than on the route cab, but you do not pay for each person; you pay for the whole trip. So when traveling in a group, it is quite an economical way to travel. The cost of the trip should be agreed upon in advance. For tourists, the prices are always overpriced, so you need to bargain. Tuk-tuk drivers on duty at train stations and tuk-tukkers traditionally call a high price, which is very difficult to bring down, and sometimes it is easier to walk a hundred meters to the nearest road and catch a tuk-tuk there. The average cost of a short trip around the city is 40 baht (per trip, not per person). And sometimes tuk-tuk drivers refuse to travel even a couple of meters for a cost lower than 40 baht. A trip out of town will cost up to 150 baht. To the airport, or to the bus station, the trip should cost no more than 100 baht. At night, prices increase.

Cab

Starting at 30 baht plus an additional 4 baht per kilometer.

Regular car cabs are not very common in Phuket. Meeting a car on the street might not always be possible and should be ordered by phone or through the reception of the hotel. Given the cost and availability of a large number of cheaper tuk-tuks and shuttle buses, there is no special sense to use a car cab to move around the city, except only to get to the airport or railway stations with luggage.

Here is what one of the tourists writes: "Cab drivers now with apps and it became easier because they understand where to go. They see the map in the app, so it was quite difficult to communicate. They did not speak English, and to formulate the directions in Thai so that they understood was always a story. I can't remember the exact price for which we went last time, but it was quite reasonable, especially on a bike it was not expensive. Fast enough. But in Phuket, it was easier with bikes. But on Samui, it was more difficult. The bike just did not come on the application, and there were few cars."

Cabs are equipped with meters, but drivers are reluctant to use them, more often insisting on trips at a negotiated price. Metered rides are more profitable. Airport cabs operate at a fixed price of 120 baht per trip to/from the airport.

Car Rental Fee

Starting from 500 baht/day

The cost of renting a car in Thailand starts from 1000 baht for short-term bookings and goes up to 500 baht for long-term bookings. It's best to search and book a rental car online using the search form and compare prices from different rental companies.

How and where can I rent a scooter?

Phuket has a well-developed infrastructure for scooter rentals, and you can easily find many options at affordable prices.

Bikes are rented out either by private owners, sometimes there are a couple of bikes at hotels, or by owners of small motorcycle parks called rentals.

The main way of communicating with rentals is via text messages on WhatsApp. All the rentals understand English text.

Most of the rental points are located in the city center. If you live on the outskirts, it's better to order delivery of the bike to your hotel or villa. In most hotels or guesthouses, you can order a bike directly at the reception. If they don't have them there, they will tell you where the nearest rental is. Do not rush with the choice; look for a cheaper option. You can bargain. It's better to give preference to large offices, which have a lot of motorcycles, because there is less probability to face "divorce" for scratches and scuffs, imitation of theft, etc.

As always, there are two options:

  • Cheap and long-term, suitable for travelers who like to learn the culture and region through communication with locals, through the search for a bike. In this case, you need to call several rentals, compare conditions, and haggle.
  • The second option is to contact GetBike. We have already done all this, and immediately offer you the best option, usually at the same price that you will find yourself, or even cheaper.

The most popular, as well as many places in this region of Asia, are Yamaha and Honda scooters.

Scooters are divided into mini and maxi scooters.

  • Minis include Honda Scoopy, Honda Vario, Honda Click 125.
  • Maxi scooters are Yamaha Nmax, Honda PCX, Yamaha Xmax, Honda Forza 300.

Sometimes there are more rare models such as: GPX Drone 150cc, Yamaha Qbix, Yamaha Aerox 155, Yamaha Grand Filano, Honda ADV 160, but for Phuket it is rather rare, so I will not describe them here.

Honda Scoopy

The Honda Scoopy is a modern scooter with a retro design that combines style and comfort. It has a smooth ride and good stability at speeds up to 50-60 km/h. The scooter is fuel efficient, consuming about 3 liters for 110-120 km of travel. It is ideal for urban commuting and offers a comfortable seat for two passengers. However, it is not recommended for off-roading or extreme mountain driving with two passengers. The Honda Scoopy is a stylish and reliable choice for commuters who want to enjoy a comfortable and convenient scooter ride.

The Honda Scoopy is also a favorite among girls due to its miniaturization and light weight. Its compact size and easy handling make it an ideal choice for urban commuting, especially for those who prefer smaller and more maneuverable vehicles.

Features:
  • Weight: 99 kg
  • Dimensions (DxWxH): 1856mm x 694mm x 1060mm
  • Seat height: 740mm
  • Gas tank capacity: 3.7 liters
  • Engine displacement: 110

Yamaha Fino

This is the counterpart to the Scoopy, from Yamaha's competitor. The Scoopy is sleeker. The Yamaha Fino is sharper on acceleration. It is not much different from the previous one.

Features:
  • Weight: 96 kg
  • Dimensions: 1870mm x 740mm x 1066mm
  • Seat height: 745mm
  • Gas tank capacity: 4.8 liters
  • Engine displacement: 114

Honda Click

There are two main versions: 110 and 125, which differ in volume. The older version (125) is a bit better in everything. The device is very popular in Thailand.

It handles well for daily commuting; however, it has a few drawbacks. The 110's acceleration is not particularly fast, and over time, we noticed that the scooter became weaker when pulling uphill. In Phuket, where there are many mountain passes, this becomes an important factor. Therefore, it is better to take the version with an engine displacement of 125.

Specifications Honda Click 110i
  • Weight: 100 kg
  • Dimensions (DxWxH): 1890mm x 680mm x 1070mm
  • Gas tank capacity: 3.8 liters
  • Engine displacement: 108
Specifications Honda Click 125i
  • Weight: 112 kg
  • Dimensions (DxWxH): 1904mm x 689mm x 1103mm
  • Gas tank capacity: 5.5 liters
  • Engine displacement: 125

Honda Vario

Honda's basic model is the most popular, simple, and reliable scooter. The 160 version is powerful and tractive, suitable for two people; you can accelerate briskly for overtaking. The 125 version is cheaper, but it is not suitable for two people to overtake on a hill. If you have a larger build or you plan to ride with a child, it is better to consider Nmax or PCX models, which have wider seats in contrast to Vario, which has a narrow seat like other models in this group.

Specifications for Honda Vario 125:
  • Empty weight: 109 kg
  • Tank size: 5.5 liters
  • Dimensions (DxWxH): 1.921 x 683 x 1.096 mm
  • Engine displacement: 125
Specifications for Honda Vario 160:
  • Weight: 115 kg (117 kg with ABS)
  • Tank size: 5.5 liters
  • Dimensions (DxWxH): 1.1929 x 679 x 1088 mm
  • Seat height: 778 mm
  • Engine displacement: 156.9

Honda PCX 150

Now there is a newer version of the Honda PCX 160, but it is rarely found in this region. Sometimes you can find the 125 version. This is a great scooter suitable for long trips and city riding; it has a comfortable seat and is suitable for two people. It offers strong performance for overtaking and uphill rides. It can accelerate up to 100 km/h, but I recommend comfortable cruising at 60-70 km/h. It is considered a premium bike. A notable feature is its soft suspension.

Specifications for Honda PCX 150:
  • Weight: 126 kg
  • Dimensions (DxWxH): 1915mm x 740mm x 1090mm
  • Seat height: 761mm
  • Gas tank capacity: 6 liters
  • Engine displacement: 153

Honda Nmax 155

This is a competitor to the Honda PCX 150, with the main difference being the design; otherwise, only enthusiasts would notice the difference. It does not have such a soft suspension, but it is also very comfortable. The seats are wide.

Features for Honda Nmax 155:
  • Weight: 131 kg
  • Dimensions (DxWxH): 1955mm x 740mm x 1115mm
  • Seat height: 765 mm
  • Gas tank capacity: 6.6 liters
  • Engine displacement: 155

Renting from Rental Outlets

As mentioned, all rental points are concentrated in the city center. Google Maps is a convenient tool for locating a rental. The city does not host large rental hubs, with most having around 100-200 bikes. For instance, in Bali, there are numerous firms with fleets of 300-500 bikes. If you do not find rental firms nearby on the map, explore the streets. The sign "rent bike" will guide you, and you are likely to come across one after a 1-2 km ride. However, if you are on the outskirts, it's advisable not to search extensively.

Commonly, the bike conditions are less than ideal, and many are from the years 2011-2018. With proper care, they can be reliable options. Always assess brakes and lights, which I will explain further below.

Opt for companies with positive reviews on Google Maps for greater reliability and better bike selection. Such reputable options may be 10-50% pricier than smaller outlets not featured on Google Maps. Expect to provide your passport as collateral or occasionally a cash deposit ranging from $100 to $1000.

Renting at the Hotel

If you need a bike for a short duration, renting from a hotel is ideal even with the inflated price. Keep in mind that the delivery fee for a single day could surpass taking it directly from a rental outlet.

Most hotels provide rental services. They may offer a few bikes for rent or collaborate with partners who deliver bikes to you. Usually, the price is 50-70% higher compared to renting without involving a hotel. While they serve as intermediaries, renting through a hotel offers added security, reducing the risk of selecting an unscrupulous rental and encountering issues. The convenience, however, comes at a slightly higher cost.

Renting a Scooter at the Airport

There are no rental outlets at the airport; you can only pre-order bike delivery upon your arrival. This is a service not commonly offered by most rentals. You could spend hours searching, but no guarantee your bike would be ready. At Getbike, we do provide such a service.

If you've found a renter willing to bring the bike to your arrival, provide your flight number. Also, consider these tips:

  • Ask for the geolocation where the bike will be delivered in advance.
  • Keep the renter informed if your flight is delayed or on schedule – this enhances your chances of a smooth bike pickup.
  • Upon arrival, message them immediately on WhatsApp.

License Requirements for Renting a Scooter in Phuket

As of May 1, 2020, tourists no longer need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Thailand. Thailand ratified the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, applicable to licenses from 84 countries. While you theoretically need a category "A" license for a motorcycle, this is rarely checked when renting. However, the police announced in 2019 that rental agencies must verify this, which might change soon.

What You Need to Rent a Bike: Documents, Deposit, and More

Rentals usually demand a passport (contrary to Thai law) or a passport photocopy plus a deposit (a few thousand baht) as collateral.

The latter is preferable for tourists.

At Getbike, we require a passport copy and a deposit of 3000-5000 baht for the rental agreement.

Some hotels might let you rent a motorcycle without a passport or deposit. Larger rental companies could freeze the deposit amount on your credit card, unlocking it days after the rental, but this is rare.

Avoid using your passport as collateral to prevent difficulties. Though loss is uncommon, unscrupulous rentals might create problems.

Most rentals (with a few exceptions) offer no insurance for motorcycles. Any damage is your responsibility. Exercise caution.

Less reputable rental companies require a signed contract, specifying your and their damage liabilities. This limits bargaining but clarifies terms. Such contracts often limit the renter's responsibility to the engine, leaving you to cover other repairs, even for a burnt-out bulb or broken cable.

Scooter Rental Prices

Rental costs for motorcycles can vary depending on the region and city. On average, the starting price for a basic two-seater bike is around 250 baht per calendar day. This means that if you rent the bike at 10am and return it at 10am the next day, you'll be charged for 2 calendar days. Single-day rentals usually don't receive discounts, and you'll pay for a full day.

Be sure to check the return time for the bike. If you plan to return it early, make sure to return it within the specified time, as rental offices won't be available around the clock.

Discounts are often available for renting over several days. Monthly rentals start around 3000 baht. Some travelers claim to have rented a bike for a month for as low as 1500 baht, but the veracity of such claims can vary.

New motorcycles with low mileage tend to have higher rental costs. When dealing with small rental offices or hotels, bargaining is recommended to achieve the mentioned prices.

Delivery of the Bike to Your Location

Arranging delivery of the bike to your accommodation is usually possible. However, delivery to restaurants or other public places is less likely as rentals need your specific location. There's a risk of missing the delivery if you're not at the specified location when it arrives.

Rental arrangements for delivery often take time. Discussions about delivery details can extend for hours or even days. Some rentals might respond to your inquiries after an hour or so.

It's advisable to schedule delivery for the next morning or evening when you're certain to be present, allowing for a potential delay.

If you plan to use the bike early in the morning, avoid scheduling delivery only an hour or two in advance.

Typically, the bike owner and a family member, if it's a small local rental, will come on two scooters, leaving one for you and taking the other.

Note that delivery is usually available for rentals of 2 days or more.

Delivery fees for rentals under 7 days might be around 100 baht. Some might ask for 300-500 baht, possibly as separate charges for delivery and return. Bargaining is an option here.

For monthly rentals, delivery is often free. For rentals of 7 days or more, you might also be able to negotiate free delivery.

If you plan to change accommodations, discuss delivery arrangements in advance. Typically, the delivery cost assumes delivery and return from the same location. Extra charges of 100-300 baht might apply if the return location differs.

Booking a Bike

Booking a bike in advance is virtually impossible in Phuket, even with the largest rental companies. They lack accounting and reservation systems. If you choose a bike and wish to book it, it's unlikely to be successful.

Several factors can affect bike availability, even if it seems like you've booked it. Firstly, your chosen bike might be rented to another tourist who arrives sooner. Secondly, if it was initially planned to rent the bike to you upon your arrival, the current renter might extend their rental period.

Thus, pre-booking a bike often results in the same availability as booking it on the day of arrival. To optimize your chances, make a list of suitable rental companies, message them on WhatsApp upon arrival, and proceed with the first responder for bike delivery.

Condition of Bikes

Phuket has a mix of new and old scooters in its rental fleet. Some models date back to 2022 or even 2023, while others are older and might be in varying conditions. Be especially cautious with models like Honda Click 125 or Yamaha GT125 in smaller local rentals, as high mileage might lead to wear and tear.

Checking bikes for functional issues is important, especially in smaller rentals, where problems like malfunctioning lights, signals, or brakes might arise. Larger companies are generally more diligent, but vigilance is always advised.

Both new and old bikes are present across rental locations due to a mix of cost considerations and fleet optimization. While higher mileage bikes might be cheaper, new models are also available at varying prices.

Helmets

Helmets play a crucial role in safety and comfort while renting a scooter. A clean and well-maintained helmet can enhance your experience, while a worn or dirty one might cause inconvenience.

In Phuket, helmet quality can vary significantly, from new and clean to old and smelly. When renting from a shop, you'll be provided with a helmet. Request to see available helmets and choose the one that meets your standards. When booking with delivery, ask for a photo of the helmet to increase your chances of getting a satisfactory one.

If you're particular about helmet quality, communicate your preference in advance or consider purchasing your own helmet. Not all rental shops provide new helmets. If you need a bike for several months, purchasing your own helmet is recommended due to the availability of affordable options in Asia.

Helmet prices start at around $7 and go up to $100 for premium models. They are sold in supermarkets and specialized shops across the region.

Receiving and Returning the Scooter

If you are an experienced motorcyclist, you can often judge a bike's quality by the sound of its engine and assess its brakes. However, even with experience, when renting a bike in Phuket, it's crucial to meticulously inspect everything. This location has its own unique characteristics that differ from other places you might have ridden before.

Upon renting a motorcycle, you will receive various documents, including the rental agreement. It's highly recommended to carefully review its contents and discuss its details. The agreement might contain clauses related to rental costs and insurance that could catch you off guard.

  1. I recommend taking a 360-degree video of the scooter itself at the time of rental, as well as taking photos from different angles. This is important, even if you didn't cause any damage or drop it in the parking lot, if no one harmed the scooter in your absence. Records will help you prove your innocence in case you are asked to pay for damage that was already there before you rented it (it can be intentional or when the owner mistakenly thinks that you broke something, it happens that they do not notice beforehand).
Unfortunately, many newcomers who rent a scooter drop and scratch the bike. It is therefore advisable to document everything to eliminate doubts about liability for possible damages.
In my case, when I was returning the scooter, the renter claimed that I damaged the fender and demanded a $130 fee to replace and paint it. Thanks to the videotape, I was able to prove that it was prior damage.
Of course, it's important to choose a reliable rental company with positive reviews first, but it's not always easy to determine who is trustworthy and who may try to cheat.
  2. Be sure to discuss the terms and conditions of returning the scooter. Sometimes it is required to return the scooter in person to the renter, even if delivery to your place of residence was initially arranged. Sometimes this service may have an additional fee. If you plan to leave the scooter at the airport, be sure to discuss this possibility, as not all companies provide this service.
  3. Make sure that the scooter has all the necessary documents. They are usually kept in the trunk. If you plan to travel by scooter to other islands or regions, be sure to discuss this with the rental company, as not all companies allow such trips. Also, make sure you have the originals of the required documents or you may not be allowed on the ferry.
  4. Write down the contact number of the rental company on WhatsApp and take a photo of the rental form in case you lose it.
  5. When renting a scooter for a long period of time, be sure to discuss the rental cost for the following months.
  6. Clarify the type of fuel you need to put in the scooter.
  7. If you plan to rent a scooter for an extended period of time, but not a whole month, pay special attention to the terms of the rental, as the remaining 10 days may be calculated daily, even if you have previously taken the scooter for 4 months.
  8. Pay attention to the condition of the tires. Although it may be difficult for a beginner to determine their quality, you should avoid scooters with worn rubber. It rains frequently in Thailand, especially from April to October, and on slick tires you can easily lose control and drive off into a ditch. Inspect several scooters and compare the condition of their tires. If you think the rubber is too worn, you can ask for a replacement.
  9. If you have ordered delivery of the scooter, ask the rental agent to provide you with pictures in advance. You can always refuse the scooter on the spot and ask to bring another one if there are available options.
  10. Ask when the scooter was last serviced. If the rental is planned for a long term, ask when the next maintenance is due. The owner may come and pick up the scooter for the maintenance checkup, giving you another scooter for that time.
  11. Clarify the fuel level requirements when returning the scooter. There may be different requirements, but usually you need to fill it up at the same level you received it.
  12. There may also be mileage restrictions, although this is rare. Clarify this point.
  13. Don't hesitate to ask the renter to show you how the scooter's major systems work. Make sure you know how to turn on and start the scooter, how to open the trunk, and how to use the turn signals.
  14. Also check the operation of the following basic scooter systems:
    • Lighting: check the operation of the low beam and high beam.
    • Brakes: although it may be difficult for a beginner to assess the condition of the brakes, you will be able to assess this as you use the scooter. Remember, the less mileage the scooter has, the better all of its mechanics work. The brake handle should not fail.
    • The handlebars: check for any play in the handlebars. If there is too much backlash, it can cause discomfort when riding.
  15. Note that foreign-owned companies may have additional conditions and penalties. Some of these may include:
    • Penalties for returning the scooter early.
    • Penalties for returning the scooter to a different location than where you got it.
    • Penalties for returning it with an empty tank.
    • Penalties for delayed return by several hours, etc.

    • Consider these terms and conditions when choosing a rental company.
  16. It is important to remember that renting a scooter is a serious responsibility. Be careful when choosing a rental company, familiarize yourself with all the terms and conditions and ask all the necessary questions to ensure safety and comfort when using the scooter.

I hope this information helps

Return of the Scooter

In general, everything is simple - write to your rental company in WhatsApp that you need to come and pick it up - if you took it with delivery or come to the place where you took it. If everything is okay with the bike, the owner does not make any claims - then take the deposit, if you left it and do not forget to write a review - for rentals it is important.

Where and How to Fill Up the Bike?

You need to fill up with 95 gasoline. Sometimes you can fill up with 92, but nowadays 95 is available almost everywhere.

The most cost-effective way to fill up is at regular gas stations. A full tank (which usually holds 3 or 4 liters) is enough for more than 100 kilometers. If there are no gas stations available, you can fill up at bottle filling stations that are located along the road or in service centers, but the cost will be about one and a half times higher.

Gasoline prices are constantly changing, today (June 21, 2023) 1 liter of 95 costs 35.94 bath ($1.03).

In remote areas, such as the mountainous regions in the north of Thailand, gas stations and settlements are very rare, and it is possible to find yourself without fuel. Moreover, in the evening or at night, passing traffic becomes a rare occurrence and you can spend hours without seeing a single car. To avoid such a situation, it is highly recommended to fill up a full tank at the earliest opportunity before traveling to such places.

Where to Park a Motorcycle?

When renting a motorcycle for a few days, it is important to know where to park it safely at night. We strongly recommend not leaving your motorcycle unattended on the street, even if it is secured with a tether or chain.

Most hotels provide free parking spaces for motorcycles to their customers. Some hotels even offer indoor parking where the bike will be monitored. To find out if this is available, ask the hotel staff at the front desk. They can help you arrange parking for your motorcycle. Sometimes it may be necessary to leave the keys to the motorcycle at reception so that the staff can move it inside the room during the night.

If the hotel does not provide parking spaces or you prefer an alternative option, you can use paid parking in the city. You can find many of these parking lots everywhere and the cost of overnighting a motorcycle is usually 10-20 baht.

Insurance

You need to clarify if there is insurance in each individual case. Most often, there is no insurance at all, none. Especially if it's a small rental.

Insurance Conditions at GetBike:

In case of an accident, the insurance covers everyone who got injured in an accident for medical expenses up to 30,000 baht per person. 200,000 baht in case of death or permanent disability.

In case of losing the key, a fee of 400 baht is charged for a new key.

Bike insurance in case of damage and theft. Usually, it costs $4.5 per day, with a deductible (own risk) of $100-$200. If insurance is not purchased, in case of bike damage due to an accident, the customer must pay for the full cost of bike repair.

In case of an accident where the customer is at fault, the customer must pay for the repair of the third-party bike.

What to Do If You Damage the Bike or Are Involved in an Accident

You need to take care of your own insurance and health and life in case of bike rental; the rental insurance does not cover any of these.

“As far as I know, the rental company is not concerned about who is at fault, all responsibility lies with the customer. They return the bike in the same condition they rented it, or pay if there's no insurance.”
— Edward, GetBike Manager

The general procedure is as follows: first, call the rental company; they might come if necessary and help you figure out how to proceed. Then, you can consider calling the police (if you decide to involve them). The rental company can assist in understanding the situation and guide you on the actions to take.

If you have insurance for the bike, you should definitely inform the rental company to avoid any questions later. And keep in mind that minor damages, usually even if covered by insurance, are often paid by the customer; in 99% of cases, insurance doesn't work for such cases.

“Do not count on the police in case of an accident; the police and locals will find a way to blame a foreigner, it's experience.”
— Justin, Owner of a Small Bike Rental in Phuket

If the bike needs repair, the customer pays not only for the cost of parts and repair work, but also the bike rental cost for the days it's under repair.

Can I Repair the Bike Myself to Avoid Paying the Bike Owner for Damages?

Make sure to coordinate self-repairs with the bike or rental owner to avoid conflicts; it's often a sensitive issue.

As a rule, self-repair doesn't make sense if you rented the bike from a reputable company or a decent rental; they won't excessively charge you for repairs. Additionally, it's not convenient due to the time required.

In some contracts, it is explicitly stated that you must not repair the motorcycle yourself if it was damaged (referring to external damage due to an accident or fall). In these cases, you are obligated to pay for the repair as assessed by the rental owner or repair it at their workshop.

If you feel that the damage cost is excessive, you can negotiate. Before meeting the owner, you can visit a workshop and get an approximate repair cost; this will help you defend your position.

What to Do If the Bike Breaks Down

Be sure to have the rental owner's WhatsApp. This may be needed, for example, in case of breakdowns or other bike issues. If something happens, first contact the owner; they will assist you since it's in their interest.

The bike owner is responsible for the vehicle's operational condition, and you shouldn't repair anything unless the breakdown clearly occurred due to your fault or the contract states otherwise. For instance, if a headlight bulb burns out, the clutch isn't working, or the engine doesn't start – it's not your problem. However, if the breakdown is clearly your fault, like riding into a pothole and damaging the wheel, the rental owner likely won't cover the repair costs. If you have a flat tire, it's easiest to reach the nearest workshop and repair it at your own expense (replacing the inner tube costs around 200 baht, but as usual, don't forget to haggle).

Traffic Violation Fines in Thailand 2023

In Thailand, a points-based system is being implemented. The new traffic law was announced in the Royal Gazette on July 12, 2022, and comes into effect 180 days after its publication (starting from January 9, 2023).

Here's what one tourist says about police crackdowns:

“Another thing on Phuket is the increased number of police crackdowns. They stand in traffic, targeting people, tourists specifically on bikes, not cars, mainly on bikes. They stop, check documents, ask for an international license for the bike, helmets, and start issuing fines. The regular fine used to be 400-500 baht, but lately it's become stricter. I can't say exactly how much the fine is now; they take it, of course, off the record, without issuing any documents.”
— Daniil Ilyunin, Movement Trainer, Instagram
Visited Phuket 5 times.

Many tourists in Thailand are unfamiliar with traffic rules. Common violations among tourists include riding motorcycles or scooters without helmets and lacking the appropriate driver's license. Many people don't realize that driving a scooter or motorcycle in Thailand requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a Thai driver's license. Additionally, scooter rental agencies can be fined for renting scooters to individuals without valid licenses. Encounters with the police at checkpoints in Phuket happen quite frequently.

Checkpoints in Phuket: How to Behave

Checkpoints are regular police checks at fixed locations. Usually, several police officers are present at checkpoints. During checks, remain calm and don't create any problems. Thai police are generally friendly and may show leniency, but they do not tolerate aggressive behavior.

Checkpoints are also conducted at night. The police check drivers' sobriety and may conduct searches for narcotics. Remember that e-cigarettes, popular in the West, are illegal here and are considered drugs.

Traffic Violation Fines in Thailand in 2022 (Updated)

If caught driving without an IDP, an on-the-spot fine will be issued, which you must pay in cash at the nearest police station. After paying the fine, you'll enter a 24-hour quarantine period, meaning you won't receive a second fine for driving without an IDP within the next 24 hours. Of course, this quarantine period doesn't apply to those caught driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. For this violation, a fine of 20,000 baht and a threat of imprisonment are applicable.

Driving in Thailand: Speak Thai or Pretend Not to Understand?

If you know at least a few words in Thai, it might influence the police officer's decision and potentially soften the punishment. Pretending that you don't understand a word in Thai or English and have no idea why you're being fined won't work.

Traffic Rules and Regulations in Phuket

Traffic in Thailand follows the left-hand driving rule. Road conditions are generally good. In some cases, toll roads with alternative free routes exist, but these alternative routes might have lower road quality.

Opinions on the intensity and safety of traffic in Thailand vary based on driving experience. Those who lack driving experience and travel through Thailand only as passengers might perceive the traffic as calm with very few accidents. However, the statistics speak for themselves. Approximately 14,000 people die on Thai roads annually, averaging 23 deaths per 100,000 population, including tourists. According to 2014 data, Thailand ranks high in the world for road fatalities. Motorcycles are among the most dangerous modes of transport, and even minor accidents involving motorcycles can have fatal consequences.

As soon as you get behind the wheel in Thailand, you'll realize that the reality of road traffic is different from what an external observer might perceive.

Here are some recommendations, perhaps subjective, but reflecting the author's perspective:

  • Thai drivers are excellent drivers (the author's ersonal opinion). They have very quick reactions that can't be compared to ours. Many of them start riding motorcycles and mopeds from childhood, and they continuously practice their skills, including on special training grounds. Don't dare to compete with them or maneuver on the road as skillfully as they do.
  • Thais treat tourists on the road with special attention and are willing to let you pass even where they shouldn't, but only if they notice that you're a tourist.
  • Traffic on Thai roads is very intense, yet unhurried. They rarely drive fast, but they maneuver skillfully and easily fit into any available space between vehicles. Trying to imitate them is not advisable.
  • Try to adjust to their slower pace of movement, refrain from accelerating excessively even on an empty road. You can always expect someone to suddenly pull out in front of you for an overtaking maneuver or to turn onto the road from the shoulder for a U-turn. Thai drivers are used to others moving slowly and consider the distance to you safe. However, if you're moving too fast, trouble is inevitable.
  • Never forget that a motorcycle is far from being a car, and it's much harder to control. Falling off a motorcycle on a sharp turn is quite easy, especially if you overdo the throttle.

Remember that not all drivers in Thailand will be friendly and willing to let you pass. Aggressive situations that go beyond what's allowed often occur on the roads. Local media regularly report conflicts between drivers that end in fights or even shootings. This is particularly noticeable in major cities and resorts. Therefore, be polite and avoid conflicts. Remember that the "yield to the fool" rule applies here, as it does in any other country.
