At the end of the article, I will give you an option where you can rent a motorbike in Phu Quoc.
How to Have Fun in Phu Quoc While Getting Around on a Scooter?
I believe this to be my fourth winter in Vietnam. I've visited practically every resort in Vietnam, and based on my own experience, Phu Quoc is among the top destinations in Southeast Asia as well as Vietnam. Since the island's attractions are all spread out, renting a bike in Phu Quoc is the ideal option. You can explore the island's natural features and attractions on your own by taking use of mobile transportation. In addition to the Safari Park, I suggest seeing the longest sea cable car in the north of the island, Vinpearl, which is home to a water park and entertainment complex, and renting a bike in Phu Quoc to make the most of your time there. For those traveling to Phu Quoc for the first time,
Fascinating fact: If you're in Phu Quoc during the electronic music event "Episode," I highly suggest going to this vibrant location directly on the beach. Additionally, don't forget to rent a bike while you're there. In my opinion, the festival's total intensity and impact will surpass that of Dong Dong itself. There's a beautiful pearl farm nearby where you can view and even purchase actual pearls. In the past, when the island was still undeveloped, the only place in Phu Quoc to rent a bike was on Dong Dong city's main street, where the rental shop was located close to the marketplace. There was a Vietnamese guy who always had good bikes and didn't overcharge customers. But still,
It's lot easier now; I use the "GetBike Vietnam" website to reserve the bike I need for the necessary number of days in advance and don't worry about delivery. It's convenient to rent a scooter in Phu Quoc from "GetBike Vietnam" because the proprietor delivers it right to my hotel. Actual bike owners register and rent out their scooters on this website on favorable terms, which is quite handy and similar to selecting a car on Airbnb.
About the Police
You'll hardly see the police on the island, but keep in mind that when riding a bike, it's mandatory to wear a helmet. If stopped by the police without a helmet, it could result in fines in Vietnam, and they might even confiscate your bike.
About Driver's Licenses
Remember about driver's licenses when ordering a bike rental in Phu Quoc - they should be of an international standard. Usually, without such documents, you can try to negotiate with the police and pay about 200,000 dong, and without a helmet, be prepared to pay at least 500,000. It all depends on who you encounter and how you behave during the situation.
About Traffic
Moving around the island outside the city is not difficult, but the roads there are very narrow, and the road quality is relative, but acceptable for renting a bike in Phu Quoc. I cautiously recommend being in Dong Dong city, there are a lot of people, and consequently, chaotic traffic, as in any big city in Vietnam. Overall, enjoy your stay on Phu Quoc Island, rent a bike, and be careful while riding!
Be Polite
Respect local customs and rules. In the video below, tourists rode through a crowd on the beach and provoked the anger of the local residents. It ended badly.

Before delivering the bike, you'll receive free consultation on safety measures for operating the vehicle, as well as detailed instructions on the rules of riding a bike on Phu Quoc Island.
What is Required for Renting a Bike or Scooter
In Vietnam, starting from 2018, new traffic rules have been introduced in the country. For all vehicles, drivers must have identification. International driver's licenses are valid in the country. For bike operation, driver's licenses of categories A or B are acceptable. We recommend getting advice from our manager on this matter. Riding a bike is only allowed with a helmet. Within the city limits, the speed should not exceed 40 km/h. When traveling outside the city, the maximum speed cannot exceed 80 km/h.
Travel is only permitted in the far right lane. Shifting to the left lane is allowed for overtaking and bypassing obstacles. The main rule for bikes is to give way to those "above" you. In this case, the hierarchy is bike - car - heavy-duty vehicle. Note that Vietnamese police officers monitor drivers' actions on highways and record violations by preparing reports.
- Renting a bike in Phu Quoc is done without depositing a passport; providing a copy of the document is sufficient.
- All helmets have visors (special protective glass) that prevent dust and insects. Some owners require a small deposit for use.
- Deposits can be made in the Vietnamese dong or dollars.
Before delivering the vehicles, all bikes undergo technical maintenance, as well as the necessary minimum of branded service.
You can rent a bike for either 1 day or for a calendar month. Before accepting the rented bike, the client inspects the vehicle for chips, cracks, and other damages, after which a service contract is signed, specifying the responsibility of each party.
